DemDaily: 2016 Presidential Primary & Caucus Calendar

Each Political Party's presidential nominee is chosen through a series of presidential primary elections and caucuses -- held in each US state and territory between February-June prior to the November general election.


Primary Elections are run by state and local governments. Caucuses are private events that are run by the political parties themselves. Each state determines their own process and/or a mix of both.

This phase of the nomination process narrows the field to top candidates and determines the number of pledged delegates from that state that will attend each party's national convention. These delegates, in turn, select their party's presidential nominee.
